How to Grind Mushrooms
The best way to store your dehydrated mushrooms is simply by grinding them into powder. While it may sound complicated, this can be done in just a few steps that are easier to follow with the right tools.
Mushroom powders have a lot of nutritional benefits, and in addition to that, it adds a mushroom's earthy flavor and nice taste when added to any mixture. Another good thing about blended mushrooms is that you can keep them for a longer time, so you don't have to run out of mushroom stock during its scarcity period.
Grinding dehydrated mushrooms is very simple and easy to make. Simply follow up these step-by-step instructions on how to grind mushrooms.
Dehydrate your Mushrooms
Before blending your mushrooms into powder, you'll need to dehydrate them to get that sponginess out and to make the grinding process an easy one.
You can dry the mushrooms in a low heat oven or a dehydrator. A good choice dehydrator is the Hamilton Beach 32100A Food dehydrator. With five stackable drying trays, you can dry more mushrooms at a time. It allows continuous airflow that provides even dryness and comes with a clear enough lid for you to easily check your mushrooms and adjust the drying temperature if you need to.
For this process, use fresh mushrooms—be sure to choose edible and nontoxic ones. Depending on the type of mushroom you're using, you can decide to dry them by first slicing them or drying them whole. However, most mushrooms require slicing before drying.
Clean your mushrooms, slice them, and set them on the dehydrator trays—avoid placing them too close to each other so air can circulate. Blot the mushrooms using a paper towel before settling them into the dehydrator. Once they become crispy, then they are properly dried.
Place Dehydrated Mushrooms into a Food Processor or Blender
After the mushrooms have been properly dehydrated—once they become leathery and not spongy—place them into a food processor or a blender. We recommend Cuisinart DLC-2ABC mini prep plus food processor. Its multitasking ability makes it a perfect choice for you. In addition, it handles different food processing tasks like chopping, grinding, blending, emulsifying, and pureeing. You can also manage the pulsing with its pulse control button.
Grind the dried mushrooms for about 20-40 seconds or until you get a fine powder. Remember to take a pulse after 15-20 seconds to break up the larger bits.
Strain the Chunks
After grinding your mushrooms into powder, you'll need to sieve the powder to separate the larger bits and reblend them or store them differently.
To do this, you will need to use a fine-mesh strainer, one with a tight hole that won't let the powder pass through. The Cuisinart fine mesh stainless steel strainers will do just better. They are perfect for sifting your powdered mushroom.
Just place your strainer on top of the large container, pour your blended mushroom into the mesh and sieve out the chunks, and after that, you can put them back into the food processor and reblend. It's that easy!
Choose the Right Storage Container
Using the right storage container to store your mushroom powder will help preserve its freshness and increase the shelf life. Keep in an airtight jar —preferably a glass container. There are different food storage container sets you can get from Amazon. The chefs path airtight storage container sets come with 7 premium containers of 1 large, 2 medium, 2 small, and 2 mini containers that allow a higher storing capacity than other sets.
Keep your blended mushroom in a cool and dark area out of direct heat for extended shelf life. Properly stored dried mushrooms can last up to 12 months.
Using Mushroom Powder
Once you've completed the four steps above, the next is to start using your blended mushrooms. You can add powdered mushroom to:
- Smoothies or cakes
- Soup
- Broth
- Sauces
- Gravy
- Breakfast cereal
- Yogurt
The blended mushroom can also be used in different ways just as the fresh mushrooms—for stews, omelets, dumplings, stir-fry, oatmeal, etc.
That's it! The quick and amazing ways to grind your mushrooms and turn them to fine powder.
